What Can Our Best Scientific Theories Tell Us About The Modal Status of Mathematical Objects?

چکیده
Indispensability arguments are used as a way of working out what there is: our best science tells us things are. Some philosophers think that indispensability can be to show we should committed the existence mathematical objects (numbers, functions, sets). Do also deliver conclusions about modal properties these entities? Colyvan (in Leng, Paseau, Potter (eds) Mathematical knowledge, OUP, Oxford, 109-122, 2007) and Hartry Field (Realism, mathematics modality, Blackwell, 1989) each suggest consequence empirical methodology is resulting only said exist (or not exist) contingently. Kristie Miller has argued this line thought doesn’t work (Miller in Erkenntnis, 77 (3), 335-359, 2012). argues direct tension with contingentism objects, they cannot tell status objects. I argue Miller’s argument crucially imprecise, making it clearer no longer shows strategy collapses or unstable if delivers contingentist is.

What can exoplanets tell us about our Solar System ?
We update our analysis of recent exoplanet data that gives us a partial answer to the question: How does our Solar System compare to the other planetary systems in the Universe? Exoplanets detected between January and August 2002 strengthen the conclusion that Jupiter is a typical massive planet rather than an outlier. The trends in detected exoplanets do not rule out the hypothesis that our So...
متن کاملWhat can BDNF genotype tell us about our memory?
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is part of the family of neurotrophic factors and is widely expressed in the human brain. BDNF is involved in many neuronal physiological functions, including synaptic plasticity and remodeling, axonal guidance, induction of long-term potentiation, and resilience to neuronal insults, as well as modulation of amyloid-b production. Given its relevance to t...
متن کاملWhat can cognitive science tell us about scientific revolutions?∗
Kuhn’s Structure of Scientific Revolutions is notable for the readiness with which it drew on the results of cognitive psychology. These naturalistic elements were not well received and Kuhn did not subsequently develop them in his published work. Nonetheless, in a philosophical climate more receptive to naturalism, we are able to give a more positive evaluation of Kuhn’s proposals. Recently, p...
متن کاملWhat do our genes tell us about our past?
The use of DNA sequences to elucidate the history of relationships of organisms is widespread, and focus on our species has been intense. This paper examines some simple aspects of using genetic information to analyze relationships within and amongst humans. Clonal markers (mtDNA and Y chromosomal DNA) have always shown a high degree of structure and robustness when analyzed for hierarchical st...
متن کاملWhat can proteomics tell us about platelets?
More than 130 years ago, it was recognized that platelets are key mediators of hemostasis. Nowadays, it is established that platelets participate in additional physiological processes and contribute to the genesis and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Recent data indicate that the platelet proteome, defined as the complete set of expressed proteins, comprises >5000 proteins and is highly ...
